Mercedes-AMG GT63 4-Door X290 — M177 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 Performance Guide

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe X290 (2019–present) brings the AMG GT nameplate to a four-door, four-seat grand tourer platform. The GT63 and GT63 S run the M177 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 577 HP (GT63) or 630 HP (GT63 S), paired with 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive and a 9-speed MCT gearbox. The GT63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid variant adds an electric motor on the rear axle for a combined 831 HP — the most powerful production Mercedes-AMG ever built.

The GT63 shares its M177 powertrain architecture with the C63 W205 and E63 W213, meaning the full YPG Motorsport M177 tuning programme applies directly. The GT63 S benefits from the same twin-scroll turbocharger specification as the E63 S, with aggressive factory boost targets and substantial headroom for ECU calibration.

ECU Tuning

The GT63 S uses the same twin-scroll M177 variant as the E63 S with comparable tuning headroom. Stage 1 ECU calibration delivers 700–740 WHP on stock hardware with no changes required. Stage 2 with catless downpipes pushes output to 780–830 WHP. The 4MATIC+ system handles the increased torque effectively — the GT63 S is one of the most tractable high-power platforms in the AMG range thanks to its wide rear tires (305-section) and sophisticated torque-vectoring rear axle.

ECU tuning is delivered via YPG Flash (remote OBD) for OBD-accessible models. Later-production GT63 models with locked Bosch MDG1 controllers require ECU unlock as part of the YPG Bench mail-in workflow.

Performance Upgrade Path

Stage 1 tuning is the obvious starting point. For Stage 2, add catless downpipes and consider an intake upgrade. The GT63's exhaust system is restrictive from the factory — downpipes significantly improve turbo spool and mid-range response. For builds beyond 850 WHP, the upgrade path follows the same M177 ladder proven on the C63 and E63: hybrid turbochargers, forged internals, and matched calibration. Complete M177 crate engines are available for race-application GT63 builds.
