What Makes the Flat-Plane Crank Different?

A flat-plane crankshaft has crank throws at 180° instead of the conventional 90° cross-plane layout. This creates an even firing order per bank (like a pair of inline-4s sharing a crankcase), which delivers sharper throttle response, higher-RPM capability, and a distinct exhaust note. The trade-off: increased vibration, higher torsional stress on the crankshaft, and more demanding bearing loads — which is why the M178 requires more careful attention to rotating assembly balance and durability when building for high power.

M178 Tuning Stages

The M178 shares the same twin-turbo architecture as the M177, so it responds similarly to boost increases — but the flat-plane crank changes the stress profile. Higher torsional loads mean the rotating assembly demands more respect at equivalent power levels.

The flat-plane M178 is less forgiving of stock-internals abuse than the cross-plane M177. We recommend forged internals at Stage 2+ on the M178 — earlier than on the M177 — because the higher torsional loads from the flat-plane crank increase stress on connecting rod bearings. M178 Build Path: Which Build Do You Need?

The M178 build path mirrors the M177 in structure but requires flat-plane-specific components throughout. You cannot interchange M177 and M178 rotating assemblies — the crankshaft, balance strategy, and firing order are fundamentally different.

Ported Cylinder Heads

Best for: GT / GT S / GT C owners running Stage 1 who want more airflow without opening the bottom end. The M178 shares the same hot-vee head architecture as the M177, so port work follows the same strategy — larger intake and exhaust ports, optimized combustion chambers, upgraded valves, springs, and retainers. On a flat-plane engine, even exhaust flow between banks is critical for consistent boost delivery.

Short Block

Best for: Engines targeting Stage 3+, engines with rod bearing wear, or high-mileage GT platforms being rebuilt for performance. The M178 short block uses flat-plane-specific forged pistons, forged H-beam rods, and upgraded bearings with clearances set for the unique harmonic profile of the 180° crank. This is the foundation for any serious M178 build.

Known Issues and Failure Points

The M178 shares many components with the M177 but adds flat-plane-specific stress patterns. These are the documented failure modes.

Flat-Plane Crank Torsional Stress

The 180° crank layout generates higher torsional vibration than a cross-plane design. This increases fatigue loading on the crankshaft, connecting rod bearings, and crankshaft damper. On high-power builds, the factory crankshaft damper must be upgraded, and bearing clearances need to be set wider than M177 specs to account for the additional harmonic content. This is a fundamental engineering consideration, not a defect — but it means M178 builds require more precision than M177 builds at equivalent power levels.

Connecting Rod Bearing Wear (Tuned Cars)

Same failure mode as the M177, but it occurs earlier on the M178 due to the higher torsional loads. Stock rod bearings on a tuned M178 are the single most common failure point. Forged rods with upgraded bearings are mandatory for any build targeting sustained high-boost output.

Turbo Wastegate Rattle

Same as M177 — the internal wastegate actuator develops play over time. Typically cosmetic rather than performance-affecting. Resolved with upgraded turbos on Stage 2+ builds.

Dry Sump Scavenge System

The M178's dry sump oiling system is robust, but the scavenge pump and lines must be inspected during any major build. Under extreme lateral G-forces (track use with elevated oil temperatures), the scavenge system works harder. On race builds, we verify scavenge pump function and upgrade oil lines as needed.

Thermal Management at High Boost

The AMG GT platform sits lower and has less frontal area than the sedan/SUV M177 applications. At sustained high boost, heat soak becomes a factor — especially on track. Upgraded intercooler systems, oil coolers, and thermal management strategies are part of any serious M178 build package.

The AMG GT's low hood line and front-mid engine position don't leave room for a conventional wet sump. The dry sump system maintains oil pressure under high-G cornering, hard braking, and sustained track use — oil starvation under lateral load is essentially eliminated.
