Mercedes-AMG GT63 / GT63 S ECU Tuning Guide — X290 M177 4.0T V8 | Stage 2 & 4 | YPG Motorsport

The Mercedes-AMG GT63 S is the most powerful four-door AMG has ever built from the factory — 603 HP from the M177 LS2 twin-turbo V8, paired with AMG's Speedshift MCT 9G transmission and 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. It is also one of the most popular performance cars in the GCC, and one of the most responsive M177 platforms to ECU tuning. YPG Motorsport builds ECU calibrations and complete Stage 4 turbo packages for the GT63 and GT63 S.

M177 LS2 in the GT63: The AMG Flagship V8

The GT63 runs the M177 LS2 — the twin-scroll variant of the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with larger compressor housings and more aggressive factory boost targets than the M177 LS1 in the W205 C63. The base GT63 produces 577 HP and 800 Nm. The GT63 S pushes to 603 HP and 900 Nm. Both models share the same engine hardware — the difference is entirely in the factory ECU calibration and turbo boost targets.

This means the base GT63 has the most to gain from tuning — the same turbocharger hardware at lower factory boost levels means more headroom for ECU recalibration. The same M177 LS2 also powers the G63 and GLS63.

Stage 1: Software Only

Stage 1 on the GT63 recalibrates boost pressure, ignition timing, torque limiters, and throttle response. The twin-scroll turbochargers in the M177 LS2 have significant headroom above the factory boost targets. The result is approximately 100 HP gained with zero hardware changes. The AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission adapts to the new torque curve at Stage 1 levels without TCU recalibration.

Stage 2: Downpipes + ECU Recalibration

Stage 2 adds catless downpipes and a recalibrated ECU file optimized for reduced exhaust backpressure. Output reaches 760 HP and 1,080 Nm. For a detailed breakdown of catless vs 200-cell downpipe options on the M177, read our C63 W205 catless downpipes guide. At this power level, TCU recalibration is strongly recommended to ensure the 9-speed transmission manages the elevated torque without protective intervention.

Stage 4: Full-Billet Turbo Upgrade — 1,000 HP

The YPG GT63 Stage 4 Turbo Upgrade ($9,999.99) is a full-billet precision-engineered turbo solution that replaces the factory turbochargers with units capable of supporting 1,000+ HP. Read our Stage 4 turbo upgrade guide for the complete technical breakdown.

At this power level, M177 forged internals become mandatory — the factory connecting rods are not designed for sustained operation above 800 HP. Read our M177 forged internals build guide for the full breakdown on when to upgrade, what breaks, and cost.

The Stage 4 build path for the GT63 is: forged internals → full-billet turbochargers → catless downpipes → upgraded fuel system → Stage 4 ECU calibration. YPG builds complete GT63 packages from daily-driven Stage 1 to full 1,000 HP track weapons.

4MATIC+ and Launch Control

The GT63's 4MATIC+ system with fully variable torque distribution is one of its greatest advantages when tuned. Unlike rear-wheel-drive AMGs that become traction-limited at higher power levels, the GT63's AWD system puts the additional power to the ground effectively. Launch control at Stage 2 power levels delivers genuinely dramatic acceleration — consistent sub-3-second 0-100 km/h times on GCC-spec tires.

GCC Calibration

YPG GT63 calibrations are developed for 98 RON fuel and GCC ambient temperatures. The GT63 is one of the most popular performance cars in Kuwait, UAE, and Saudi Arabia — YPG has calibrated more GT63 ECUs across the Gulf than any other independent tuner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much HP does a GT63 S ECU tune add?

Stage 1 on the GT63 S adds approximately 97 HP for 700 HP total. Stage 2 with downpipes pushes to 760 HP.

What is the GT63 Stage 4 turbo upgrade?

Full-billet turbocharger upgrade for 1,000+ HP. Requires forged internals and supporting fuel system modifications. $9,999.99 for the turbo kit.

Is the GT63 base or GT63 S better for tuning?

The base GT63 gains more from tuning because the factory calibration starts lower on the same hardware. Both reach similar power levels when tuned.

Does the GT63 need forged internals for Stage 2?

No. Forged internals are required at Stage 3/4 power levels (above ~800 HP sustained). Stage 1 and 2 operate within the factory rod limits.
