Mercedes-AMG M178 Forged Internals — Rods & Pistons Kit
The Mercedes-AMG M178 4.0L twin-turbo V8 is the performance-focused sibling of the M177, found exclusively in the AMG GT family. It shares the same 83mm bore and 92mm stroke as the M177 but uses a flat-plane crankshaft and dry-sump oiling system for improved oil starvation protection under track conditions. Our M178 forged internals kit is specifically designed for the dry-sump architecture and pairs directly with the YPG Stage 4 M178 turbo system — the same combination that has demonstrated 1,200HP+ on pump fuel in our own builds.
What's Included
- 8x Forged Connecting Rods — 4340 aircraft-grade steel, dry-sump compatible clearances
- 8x Forged Pistons — 83mm bore, optimised for forced induction
- ARP Rod Bolts — 220,000 PSI rated
- Polished Crankshaft
- Piston Rings — Low-tension performance ring pack
- Wrist Pins & Clips — High-strength tool steel
- Balanced and Matched Set — within ±1.5g
Key Features
- Ceramic-Coated Piston Tops — Thermal barrier coating reduces heat transfer to the piston crown, protecting against detonation at high boost levels
- Teflon-Coated Skirts — Anti-friction coating reduces piston-to-wall contact friction, improving reliability and reducing wear under sustained high-RPM track operation
- Factory Compression Ratio — Maintains stock compression geometry for seamless ECU calibration integration
- 1,500HP+ Rated — Engineered to withstand extreme cylinder pressures from Stage 4 turbo upgrades
- Dry-Sump Specific — All clearances and specifications matched to the M178 block architecture, not the M177. Do not interchange these kits

Dry Sump Note
The M178's dry-sump oiling system is a significant advantage for track use — it eliminates oil starvation during high-G cornering and braking that affects wet-sump M177 engines. Our forged internals are designed and tested specifically for the M178's dry-sump architecture.
Why YPG Motorsport?
YPG Motorsport holds the world record for the first sub-10-second Mercedes-AMG C63 W205 quarter mile (9.97s at 828 WHP) — built on the closely related M177 platform. Our M178 forged internals kit applies the same engineering standards. Every kit is sourced from CP-Carrillo or equivalent tier-1 forging houses, inspected and balanced before shipping.
