Mercedes-AMG E63 W212 ECU Tuning Guide — M157 5.5L BiTurbo V8 | Stage 2: 820 HP | YPG Motorsport
The Mercedes-AMG E63 W212 with the M157 5.5L BiTurbo V8 is one of the most underrated performance platforms AMG has ever built. With +263 HP available at Stage 2, the M157 delivers some of the largest ECU tuning gains of any AMG engine. YPG Motorsport has been calibrating M157 ECUs since 2011 — our first year in business — and the platform remains one of our most requested tunes worldwide.
M157 5.5L BiTurbo V8: The Engine
The M157 is a 5,461cc twin-turbocharged V8 producing 557 HP in the E63 and 585 HP in the E63 S from the factory. Unlike the newer M177 4.0L that replaced it, the M157 uses a larger displacement, lower-boost calibration strategy with twin IHI turbochargers. This architecture means the M157 has enormous headroom — the turbochargers are physically larger than what the factory calibration demands, and the engine's bottom end is overbuilt relative to factory power levels.
The M157 is also found in the CLS63 W218, S63 W222, SL63 R231, G63 W463 (pre-2018), GLE63, and GLS63 of the same era. YPG calibrations cover all M157 applications.
Power Gains: Stock to Stage 2
| Spec | Stock E63 (M157) | Stock E63 S | Stage 1 | Stage 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Power | 557 HP | 585 HP | 700 HP | 820 HP |
| Torque | 720 Nm | 800 Nm | 900 Nm | 1,000 Nm |
| 0-100 km/h | 3.6s | 3.5s | 3.1s | 2.8s |
| Hardware | — | — | None | Catless downpipes |
Stage 1: Software Only
The M157 responds to Stage 1 tuning with dramatic gains. Recalibrating boost pressure targets on the twin IHI turbochargers, advancing ignition timing within safe margins, and raising the conservative factory torque limiters delivers approximately 143 HP and 180 Nm over the stock E63. The 5.5L displacement and relatively low factory boost levels mean the turbochargers are barely working at stock power — there is substantial headroom before the hardware becomes the limiting factor.
Stage 2: Catless Downpipes + ECU
Stage 2 on the M157 is where this platform becomes genuinely extraordinary. With catless downpipes reducing exhaust backpressure and a Stage 2 calibration pushing boost further, the E63 W212 reaches 820 HP and 1,000 Nm. This is +263 HP over stock — one of the single largest Stage 2 gains in any Mercedes-AMG application. At this power level, the W212 E63 runs consistent low-11-second quarter miles and trades punches with cars costing three times as much.
The Bargain AMG Supercar
The W212 E63 represents one of the best performance values in the used AMG market. A clean W212 E63 S with a Stage 2 tune delivers 820 HP from a platform that cost a fraction of a new C63. The M157's larger displacement and robust bottom end means Stage 2 power levels are achievable without forged internals — the factory rods and pistons handle 820 HP reliably under normal driving conditions.
M177 vs M157: Which Platform to Choose
For buyers deciding between a W212 E63 (M157) and a newer W213 E63 (M177), the M157 delivers larger absolute Stage 2 gains (+263 HP vs ~160 HP), while the M177 platform has a higher ceiling with turbo upgrades pushing beyond 1,000 HP. Both are exceptional tuning platforms.
GCC Calibration
YPG M157 calibrations are developed for 98 RON fuel and GCC ambient temperatures. The M157's twin IHI turbochargers benefit from the higher-octane fuel with more aggressive ignition timing and sustained boost. Temperature-compensated maps ensure consistent power delivery in extreme heat.
Remote Tuning
YPG Flash delivers M157 calibrations via OBD2 remote flash. We ship the AutoTuner hardware to your location worldwide with free shipping. The device stores both your tuned calibration and factory backup.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much HP does an E63 W212 M157 ECU tune add?
Stage 1 adds approximately 143 HP. Stage 2 with catless downpipes delivers +263 HP over stock, reaching 820 HP.
Does the M157 need forged internals for Stage 2?
No. The M157's factory bottom end handles Stage 2 power levels (820 HP) reliably. Forged internals are recommended for turbo upgrade builds exceeding 900 HP.
What other models use the M157 engine?
The M157 is found in the E63 W212, CLS63 W218, S63 W222, SL63 R231, G63 W463 (pre-2018), GLE63, and GLS63 of the same generation. YPG calibrations cover all M157 applications.
Is the M157 or M177 better for tuning?
Both respond extremely well. The M157 delivers larger absolute gains at Stage 2 (+263 HP vs ~160 HP for the M177 LS1) because the factory calibration starts further below the hardware's capability. The M177 has a higher ceiling with turbo upgrades.
Can I return to stock after tuning?
Yes. The YPG Flash device stores your factory calibration. Revert at any time.
