McLaren 720S ECU Tuning Guide — M840T Stage 1 & 2 Power, Cost & Build (2026)
The McLaren 720S uses the M840T — a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 710 HP and 568 lb-ft of torque from the factory. It is the most powerful engine in McLaren’s Super Series and one of the most technically advanced powertrains in production. The 720S accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and runs the quarter mile in 10.3 seconds on factory calibration.
McLaren’s factory calibration on the M840T is conservative by design. The engine is built with flat-plane crank architecture, dry-sump lubrication, and lightweight construction throughout. The twin-scroll turbochargers are large units with significant headroom above factory boost targets. McLaren limits power not because the engine cannot make more, but to manage thermal loads, protect the 7-speed SSG dual-clutch transmission, and meet global emissions regulations.
ECU tuning on the 720S recalibrates boost pressure, ignition timing, fuel injection, and throttle response to extract the performance the hardware is designed to deliver. Stage 1 — ECU Calibration Only
720S (710 HP stock): Stage 1 output approximately 780–820 HP / 620–660 lb-ft TQ. Gain: +70–110 HP.
A Stage 1 tune on the 720S works with completely stock exhaust and intake hardware. YPG recalibrates boost targets, ignition advance, and torque limiters to deliver a significant increase in power throughout the rev range. The mid-range torque improvement is particularly noticeable — the 720S pulls harder from 3,500 RPM through redline, transforming throttle response and overtaking performance.

Stage 2 — ECU + Exhaust Modifications
720S with sport exhaust or downpipes + Stage 2 ECU: approximately 850–920 HP / 680–720 lb-ft TQ. Gain over stock: +140–210 HP.

M838T vs M840T — McLaren Engine Comparison
The M838T (found in the 570S, 600LT, 650S, and MP4-12C) is a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8. The M840T in the 720S is a 4.0-litre evolution with larger displacement, redesigned cylinder heads, new turbochargers, and significantly more headroom for tuning. The M838T is excellent for tuning but reaches its turbo efficiency limit sooner. The M840T can support 900+ HP on stock turbochargers with proper calibration.
ECU Access on the McLaren 720S

98 RON is standard across Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. GCC-delivered 720S models benefit from the absence of particulate filters that restrict some European-spec cars.
