The M156 is the engine that started AMG's modern era — a hand-built 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 that powered everything from the C63 to the SLS. Produced from 2006 to 2015, it remains one of the most tunable and rewarding platforms in the AMG lineup. At YPG Motorsport, we've been building M156 engines for over 15 years.

Which Vehicles Use the M156?

The M156 was AMG's workhorse V8 for nearly a decade, spanning sedans, coupes, SUVs, and the SLS supercar.

Note: The SLS AMG uses the M159, a dry-sump variant of the M156 with higher compression, revised intake, and forged internals from factory. All other applications use the standard wet-sump M156.

M156 Tuning Stages

The M156 is naturally aspirated, so power gains come from breathing modifications, cam timing, displacement increases, and forced induction conversions. Here's how we approach it at YPG.

Naturally aspirated M156 builds top out around 650 WHP without forced induction. Beyond that, you're looking at a supercharger or turbo conversion on a fully built bottom end. YPG M156 crate engines are designed for builds targeting 1,500 HP or more.

M156 Build Path: Which Build Do You Need?

There are three tiers of M156 engine build, each designed for a specific use case. Choosing the right one depends on your power target, current engine condition, and what you already have done.

Ported Cylinder Heads

Best for: Cars already running headers and an ECU calibration that want the next step without opening the bottom end. YPG CNC-ported M156 heads unlock the airflow ceiling — larger intake and exhaust ports, optimized combustion chambers, performance valve job, upgraded springs and retainers. This is the single best modification for naturally aspirated power on the M156.

Short Block

Best for: Engines with bottom-end failure, high mileage, or builds targeting 700+ HP with forced induction. The M156 short block replaces the rotating assembly with forged pistons, forged H-beam rods, and upgraded bearings. We machine the block, set clearances, and balance the assembly. You keep your existing heads, intake, and accessories — we build the foundation.

Crate Engine

Best for: Complete builds, engine swaps, or when the existing engine isn't worth saving. The YPG M156 crate engine ships fully assembled — forged bottom end, ported heads, performance cams, everything torqued and ready to install. Built to handle 1,500 HP+. No core exchange required. Known Issues and Failure Points

The M156 is a strong engine, but it's not without documented failure modes — especially on early production units. Understanding these helps you decide when to rebuild vs. repair.

Head Bolt Failure (Early Production)

The most well-known M156 issue. Early engines (2006–2008 production) used head bolts that could stretch and fail under thermal cycling, leading to coolant intrusion into cylinders. Mercedes issued a service bulletin and revised the head bolts. If your engine has the original bolts and hasn't been addressed, this is a ticking clock. Any M156 build at YPG uses upgraded head bolts as standard.

Cam Adjuster Bolt Failure

The intake cam adjuster bolts can loosen or shear, causing catastrophic timing loss. This became a known issue on 2007–2011 engines. Symptoms include a rattling noise on cold start and check engine lights for cam position correlation. We replace these with upgraded hardware on every build.

Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks

The M156's plastic intake manifold can develop vacuum leaks at the gasket surface over time, causing rough idle and lean conditions. Not a structural failure, but it affects tuning consistency and should be addressed before any ECU calibration.

Lifter Tick / Valve Train Noise

Hydraulic lash adjusters can develop tick at higher mileage, especially with extended oil change intervals. On performance builds, we typically move to solid lifters or upgraded adjusters depending on the cam profile.

Wrist Pin / Connecting Rod Bearing Wear

At sustained high RPM (track use, repeated redline pulls), the factory cast pistons and powder-metal rods reach their limit. This is why forged internals are mandatory for any serious performance build — the stock rotating assembly was never designed for 7,000+ RPM abuse.

How much horsepower can a built M156 make?

Naturally aspirated, a fully built M156 with ported heads, performance cams, and a bore/stroke increase can reach 600–650 WHP. With forced induction (supercharger or turbo) on a YPG forged bottom end, the M156 platform supports 1,500 HP and beyond. The limiting factor becomes the drivetrain and fuel system, not the engine.

Is the M156 the same as the M159?

The M159 is a performance variant of the M156, used exclusively in the SLS AMG. Key differences: the M159 has a dry-sump oiling system, higher compression ratio (12.0:1 vs 11.3:1), forged internals from factory, revised intake manifold, and 563–622 HP depending on variant. The block architecture and bore spacing are shared, so M156 and M159 builds share many components.

What is the M156 head bolt issue?

Early M156 engines (2006–2008 production) used head bolts that could stretch under thermal cycling, causing coolant-to-cylinder leaks. Mercedes revised the bolts in later production. If your engine still has original early bolts, this should be addressed immediately — especially before any performance modifications. Every YPG M156 build uses upgraded head bolt hardware.

Should I build my existing M156 or buy a crate engine?

If your engine is in good health and you want a specific upgrade (ported heads, forged bottom end), building your existing engine makes sense. If the engine has major damage, high mileage, or you're targeting extreme power levels, a crate engine is faster and eliminates unknown variables. How long does a YPG M156 engine build take?

Build time is 7–21 days depending on specification and parts availability. Crate engines ship fully assembled — no core exchange required. Shipping is via FedEx or DHL to your door, worldwide.

Can the M156 handle boost reliably?

Not on factory internals. The stock cast pistons and powder-metal connecting rods will fail under boost, especially above 5–6 PSI. Any forced induction M156 build requires forged pistons, forged rods, upgraded bearings, and a revised fuel system at minimum. YPG M156 short blocks and crate engines are built specifically to handle boost safely — our forged assemblies are designed for 1,500 HP+.

What oil does the M156 use?

Mercedes specifies 0W-40 or 5W-40 meeting MB 229.5 approval. For track and performance use, we recommend a quality 10W-60 full synthetic. On forced induction builds running high cylinder pressures, oil choice and change intervals become even more critical — consult with us on your specific build.
