AMG Engine Build Cost Guide 2026 — What Does a Forged M156, M177, or M178 Build Cost?

Building a forged AMG engine is a significant investment — and one of the best decisions you can make for a high-power build. But what does it actually cost in 2026? This guide breaks down the market ranges for AMG engine builds so you can budget realistically, understand what drives the price, and avoid surprises.

Market Price Ranges (2026)

Pricing varies by engine code, build level, and specification. These are general market ranges — not specific YPG pricing. Contact us for an exact quote on your build.

Build Level Market Range (USD) What's Included
Forged short block $8,000 – $18,000 Block, forged crank, rods, pistons, bearings, seals
CNC-ported heads (pair) $4,000 – $10,000 Ported heads, upgraded valves, springs, retainers
Crate engine (long block) $15,000 – $35,000 Complete forged short block + ported heads, assembled

Ranges reflect the broader AMG engine build market. Actual pricing depends on displacement, engine code, component selection, and builder.

What Drives the Price?

Engine Code

The M156 6.2L naturally aspirated V8 is a simpler engine — no turbo system, no intercooling, fewer variables. Builds tend to fall toward the lower end of the range. The M177 and M178 4.0L twin-turbo engines are more complex — tighter tolerances, boost-specific piston designs, and higher component costs push them higher.

Component Quality

Forged internals are not all equal. The grade of forging, the connecting rod design (I-beam vs H-beam), piston coating, crankshaft material (cast vs billet), and bearing spec all affect cost. Our builds use billet crankshafts, 4340 H-beam rods, and coated forged pistons — top-tier components for serious power.

Machine Work

Block preparation is labour-intensive: bore honing, deck surfacing, main bore alignment, sleeving (when needed), and thorough cleaning. CNC head porting is done on expensive multi-axis machines with proprietary flow-bench programs. This is skilled work — and it is a significant portion of the build cost.

Valvetrain Specification

Upgraded valves (stainless intake, Inconel exhaust), matched springs, and titanium retainers add cost but are essential for reliability at sustained high RPM and high boost. Skimping on valvetrain is how engines fail.

Assembly & Testing

A properly built race engine takes time. Bearing clearances are measured and set individually. The rotating assembly is balanced as a complete unit. Every fastener is torqued to spec with fresh hardware. This is not production-line work — it is precision assembly by experienced builders.

What About Shipping?

Engine shipping is typically $500 – $2,000 depending on destination, carrier, and packaging requirements. YPG Motorsport ships via FedEx and DHL worldwide, door to door. Shipping cost is quoted at the time of order.

How to Save Money Without Cutting Corners

  • Order a short block if your heads are in good condition. You skip the head work and assembly cost. Pair with stock heads or order ported heads later.
  • Combine the build — ordering a short block and ported heads together (or a full crate engine) often costs less than ordering each component separately at different times.
  • Plan ahead — rush builds cost more. Standard 7–21 day build times keep costs down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a crate engine more expensive than a short block?

A crate engine includes everything in a short block plus CNC-ported heads, upgraded valvetrain, and full assembly. More components, more machine work, more labour.

Is it worth building an engine or should I buy a used one?

A used engine is a gamble — you do not know its history, bearing condition, or remaining life. A built engine with forged internals gives you a known foundation with documented specs and a power ceiling far beyond stock. For any serious power build, a forged engine is the only option that makes sense long-term.

Do I need forged internals for a stock-power rebuild?

If you are rebuilding to stock power with no plans for modifications, OEM-spec components may be sufficient. But if there is any chance of adding boost, a tune, or turbo upgrades in the future, forged internals are the smart investment now. Rebuilding twice costs far more than building right once.

Does YPG require a core exchange?

No. All our builds are assembled fresh. No core needed.
