The YPG Motorsport Stage 3 turbo upgrade replaces the restrictive factory turbocharger internals on the Mercedes-AMG M177 engine with higher-flowing billet compressor wheels, upgraded turbine wheels, and uprated bearing assemblies — delivering 800 to 900+ HP depending on supporting modifications and ECU calibration.
The M177 4.0L twin-turbo V8 is a proven platform for serious power. Factory turbochargers are conservatively sized to meet emissions and noise targets — they run out of airflow by 650–700 HP. The Stage 3 upgrade extends the turbo's breathing capacity while maintaining the factory housing dimensions, mounting points, oil and coolant line routing, and wastegate actuators. Bolt-on installation, no fabrication, no cutting, no permanent modifications to the engine bay.
What's Included
2x Upgraded turbochargers — complete drop-in units with:
- Billet compressor wheels — CNC-machined from forged 2618 aluminium, optimised blade geometry for higher mass airflow without sacrificing spool speed. These replace the factory cast compressor wheels that crack under sustained high-boost use.
- Upgraded turbine wheels — high-temperature Inconel alloy, revised blade profile for improved exhaust gas flow efficiency at elevated boost pressures. The factory turbine wheels are the thermal bottleneck above 25 PSI — these eliminate that ceiling.
- Ceramic-coated housings — thermal barrier coating on the turbine housings to reduce underhood heat soak. In GCC conditions (45–55°C ambient), this coating directly reduces intake air temperatures by keeping radiant heat away from the charge pipes and intercooler plumbing.
- Upgraded bearings and shaft assembly — uprated for sustained high-RPM, high-boost operation. Balanced as a complete rotating assembly to OEM specification or better.
- New gaskets and hardware — everything needed for installation.

Actual output depends on fuel quality, ambient temperature, intercooler efficiency, exhaust restriction, and ECU calibration quality. Recommended Supporting Modifications
The Stage 3 turbo upgrade is the centrepiece of the build, but the following supporting modifications are required to achieve and sustain target power levels:
- Catless downpipes — mandatory. The factory catalytic converters create excessive backpressure that limits turbine efficiency. YPG catless race downpipes are available separately.
- Stage 3 ECU calibration — the factory ECU cannot extract the additional airflow capacity. A YPG Stage 3 ECU calibration remaps boost targets, fuelling, ignition timing, torque limiters, and wastegate duty cycles specifically for this turbo hardware.
- High-flow air filters or upgraded intakes — the compressor inlet is the next restriction after turbos and downpipes. Carbon fibre airbox upgrades or high-flow panel filters recommended.
- Upgraded intercooler — strongly recommended above 800 HP. The factory intercooler is marginal at sustained high power in hot climates. An upgraded air-to-water or air-to-air intercooler core reduces intake temperatures and prevents power fade.
- Upgraded spark plugs — colder heat range plugs to prevent pre-ignition under higher cylinder pressures.
- Forged internals — recommended above 850 HP for sustained use. The factory connecting rods are the weak point. YPG Motorsport offers complete M177 forged internal kits and M177 crate engine builds rated to 1,500 HP.

Installation
The Stage 3 turbo upgrade is a bolt-on replacement. Factory mounting points, oil feed and drain lines, coolant lines, and wastegate actuators are retained. No cutting, welding, or permanent modifications required. Installation is typically performed with the engine in the car — the hot-V layout on the M177 makes turbo access straightforward once the intake manifold and charge pipes are removed.
Estimated installation time: 8–12 hours at a competent independent shop. No special Mercedes-Benz tooling required beyond standard metric tools and a torque wrench.
No core exchange required. You keep your factory turbochargers. If you want to return to stock at any point, reinstall the originals.
