Tuning Potential
The M156 and M177 have fundamentally different tuning characteristics because of their aspiration type:
- ▸ M156 (NA): Software gains are more modest — typically +20–40 HP from a Stage 1 tune via optimized timing, rev limit, and throttle maps. For big power, forced induction (supercharger or turbo kit) is required, pushing 600–800+ HP.
- ▸ M177 (Turbo): Dramatically larger software gains — +80–100 HP from Stage 1 alone. The turbochargers provide a simple lever for more power: more boost = more HP. Stage 2 with downpipes pushes +150–180 HP. Stage 3 with upgraded turbos and forged internals reaches 800+ WHP.
Which Engine is Better?
For raw tuning value: The M177 wins. Turbocharged engines offer exponentially more gains per dollar through ECU tuning alone. A simple Stage 1 flash delivers the same power increase that would require thousands in hardware on the M156.
For driving experience: The M156 offers something the M177 never can — a naturally aspirated, high-revving 6.2L V8 that screams to redline with zero turbo lag. Many enthusiasts specifically seek out M156-powered cars for the analog driving experience.
For big power builds: Both can reach 800+ WHP, but the path is very different. The M177 achieves it with turbo upgrades and internals; the M156 requires adding forced induction to a naturally aspirated platform, which is a more complex (and expensive) conversion.
