What is a Crate Engine

What is a Crate Engine? — Complete Replacement Engines Explained

A crate engine is a complete, ready-to-install engine assembly that arrives fully built — typically including the long block (block, crank, pistons, rods, heads) and sometimes accessories like intake manifolds, fuel rails, and ignition components. The name comes from the wooden crate these engines are traditionally shipped in. For performance builds, a crate engine offers a fresh, purpose-built powerplant that eliminates the risk and uncertainty of rebuilding a high-mileage factory motor.

Why Choose a Crate Engine?

There are several scenarios where a crate engine makes more sense than rebuilding your existing motor:

  • Engine failure or high mileage — A fresh crate engine eliminates worn bearings, tired valve seals, and metal fatigue
  • Stage 3+ builds — Starting with a new block ensures clean tolerances for forged pistons and rods
  • Faster turnaround — No waiting for machine shop work on your old block
  • Keep driving — Order the crate engine, prep it, and swap in one session — your car isn’t down for weeks
  • Known good baseline — Brand new factory tolerances, zero question marks

Crate Engine vs Rebuilt Engine

Factor Crate Engine (New) Rebuilt Engine
Block Condition Brand new — zero miles, zero wear Used block — may have stress cracks or bore wear
Turnaround Ships ready to install Weeks in machine shop + assembly
Risk Minimal — factory-fresh tolerances Depends on block condition and machinist quality
Cost Higher upfront Lower but unpredictable (hidden damage)
Best For High-power builds, zero-compromise reliability Budget builds, low-mileage cores

AMG Crate Engines — M156, M177, M178

YPG Motorsport supplies genuine Mercedes-AMG crate engines and short blocks for the three most popular AMG engine families. Each engine ships worldwide via air freight and can be built out with forged internals before installation.

  • M156 (6.2L NA V8) — The naturally aspirated hand-built V8 from the C63 W204, E63 W212, SLS AMG, and CLK63 Black Series
  • M177 (4.0T V8) — The twin-turbo hot-V powering the C63, E63, GT63, GLC63, and G63 from 2015+
  • M178 (4.0T V8) — The dry-sump, flat-plane-crank variant from the AMG GT, GT R, GT S, and GT C

Crate Engine + Stage 3 Build

The most powerful AMG builds start with a fresh crate engine. At YPG Motorsport, we offer complete Stage 3 packages that combine a new crate engine or short block with forged pistons, forged connecting rods, upgraded turbochargers, fuel system upgrades, and a custom ECU calibration — all validated on our dyno.

This is exactly how we built the world’s fastest C63 AMG — 9.97 seconds at 828 WHP at Kuwait Motor Town. The same engineering is available to every customer, anywhere in the world.
