The Mercedes-AMG C63 W204 (2008–2014) is powered by the M156 — AMG's hand-built 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 and the first engine designed entirely in-house at Affalterbach. The W204 C63 was produced as a sedan, coupe, and the limited-production Black Series (2012), and remains one of the most respected AMG platforms for its mechanical simplicity, linear power delivery, and the visceral character of its high-revving V8.
The M156 produces 451 HP (standard) or 487 HP (P31 Performance Package / Black Series) with 443 lb-ft of torque. Unlike later turbocharged AMG engines, the M156 delivers its power through naturally aspirated means — no turbo lag, no boost threshold, and a throttle response that is effectively instantaneous. The engine redlines at 6,800 RPM with the power peak arriving at 6,800 RPM and torque peaking at 5,000 RPM. The 7G-Tronic automatic transmission (W7C 700) handles power delivery to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential.

ECU Tuning
The M156 responds to ECU calibration with revised ignition timing, intake runner tuning, and raised rev limit. Stage 1 calibration on the naturally aspirated engine delivers 25–35 WHP — a meaningful improvement given the NA powerplant's character. The real tuning potential of the M156, however, is unlocked with forced induction. Supercharger and turbocharger kits are available from multiple suppliers, and the M156's aluminium block with press-fit iron sleeves handles boost well when paired with forged internals.
ECU tuning for the W204 C63 is delivered via YPG Flash (remote OBD — plug in and flash from anywhere worldwide) for naturally aspirated calibrations. Forced-induction builds requiring custom mapping are handled via YPG Bench (mail-in service).
Performance Upgrade Path
The W204 C63 upgrade path follows two distinct routes. The naturally aspirated route focuses on exhaust flow (long-tube headers, sport exhaust), intake improvements (high-flow air filters, ported intake manifold), and CNC-ported cylinder heads — targeting 500–520 WHP with the best NA builds. The forced-induction route adds a supercharger or turbo kit to the M156, requiring forged pistons and rods for reliable operation above 600 WHP. YPG M156 forged internals are rated to 1,500HP+, and complete M156 crate engines are available as turnkey long blocks for maximum builds.
Common Maintenance & Known Issues
The M156 has two well-documented weak points. The headbolt issue affects early production engines (2007–2010) where factory headbolts can stretch under sustained high-load operation, leading to coolant intrusion. ARP head studs are the standard fix. The cam adjuster bolt on early engines can back out and cause timing chain skip — updated hardware resolves this. Both issues are addressed as standard practice in any YPG M156 engine build.
