BMW M5 G90 ECU Tuning Guide — S68 4.4T V8 Hybrid | Stage 1 & Stage 2 | 2026
BMW M5 G90 — The New Era of M Power
The all-new BMW M5 G90 represents the most radical departure in M5 history. For the first time, BMW's flagship performance sedan pairs a twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor, creating a plug-in hybrid powertrain that produces a combined 727 HP and 738 lb-ft of torque. The G90 M5 sprints from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, weighs over 2,400 kg, and sends power through an 8-speed automatic to all four wheels via xDrive.
The engine at the heart of this system is the S68 — BMW's latest twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8, replacing the legendary S63 that powered M cars for over a decade. At YPG Motorsport, we have developed Stage 1 and Stage 2 calibrations for the S68-powered G90 M5, with remote tuning capability worldwide.
S68 Engine Overview
The S68 is not simply an updated S63 — it is a ground-up redesign. Key specifications and differences:
- Displacement: 4,395 cc (4.4L)
- Configuration: 90° V8, twin-turbocharged
- ICE Power: 585 HP at 5,600-6,500 RPM
- ICE Torque: 553 lb-ft at 1,800-5,400 RPM
- Electric Motor: 194 HP / 207 lb-ft (integrated into the 8-speed automatic)
- Combined Output: 727 HP / 738 lb-ft
- Redline: 7,200 RPM
S68 vs S63 — Key Differences
Understanding what changed from S63 to S68 matters for tuning expectations:
- 48V Mild-Hybrid Integration: The S68 incorporates a 48V starter-generator and integrated electric motor. The S63 was purely combustion.
- Integrated Exhaust Manifold: The S68 casts the exhaust manifold into the cylinder head (hot-vee), reducing turbo lag and improving packaging. The S63 used a separate external manifold.
- Revised Turbochargers: The S68 uses larger, more efficient twin-scroll turbochargers with electronic wastegate control, replacing the S63's pneumatic wastegates.
- Cross-Bank Exhaust: The S68 routes exhaust from both cylinder banks into a central hot-vee location, where both turbochargers sit. This reduces exhaust runner length and improves gas dynamics.
- Closed-Deck Block: The S68 features a closed-deck block design for improved rigidity at high cylinder pressures, compared to the S63's semi-closed deck.
- Higher Compression: The S68 runs a higher compression ratio than the S63, reflecting improvements in knock control and combustion efficiency.
These changes make the S68 a more robust and efficient platform than the S63, but also introduce new calibration challenges — particularly around hybrid torque coordination and the integrated exhaust manifold's thermal management.
Stage 1 ECU Tuning
Our Stage 1 calibration for the G90 M5 targets the ICE side of the powertrain only. We do not modify the hybrid control module or electric motor parameters.
- Stage 1 ICE Output: ~650-670 HP / ~600-620 lb-ft
- Combined Stage 1: ~800 HP / ~790 lb-ft
- Gain: +65-85 HP on ICE side (~73 HP combined)
- Modifications: Increased boost pressure targets, optimized ignition timing, revised fuel trims, adjusted torque limiter tables, sharper throttle response
- Requirements: Stock hardware, 98-100 RON fuel
Stage 1 on the G90 M5 pushes the combined output to approximately 800 HP — a significant threshold that transforms the car's character. The S68's closed-deck block and electronic wastegates provide a solid foundation for these gains, and our calibration maintains BMW's factory safety margins for exhaust gas temperature and knock protection.
Stage 2 ECU Tuning
Stage 2 adds hardware modifications to push the S68 further:
- Stage 2 ICE Output: ~720-740 HP / ~670-690 lb-ft
- Combined Stage 2: ~880 HP / ~850 lb-ft
- Gain: +135-155 HP on ICE side over stock
- Required Hardware: Sport downpipes (catted or catless), high-flow charge pipes, performance intake
- Optional: Upgraded intercooler, upgraded turbo inlet pipes
- Calibration: Higher boost ceiling, extended torque limits, revised fuelling for reduced backpressure, optimized cam phasing
At Stage 2, the G90 M5 produces approximately 880 HP combined — putting it in territory that previously required forced-induction V10 or V12 engines. The S68's closed-deck block is built for these pressures, and our experience across the platform confirms reliable operation at Stage 2 output with proper fuel and maintenance.
Hybrid System Considerations
The G90 M5's hybrid system adds a 194 HP electric motor integrated into the 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. This creates both opportunities and constraints for tuning:
- ICE-Only Calibration: We modify only the engine ECU (DME). The hybrid control module (EME) and battery management system remain stock.
- Torque Coordination: The electric motor provides torque fill during turbo spool-up and adds power during hard acceleration. Our calibration ensures the increased ICE torque does not create unsafe total drivetrain torque when combined with electric assist at full battery SOC.
- Drive Modes: The G90 M5 offers Electric, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes, plus configurable M modes. Our calibration enhances all ICE-active modes while leaving the pure-electric mode unaffected.
- Transmission Protection: The 8-speed automatic must handle combined torque from both the V8 and electric motor. Our calibration respects the transmission's torque limits, which are the primary constraint on total system output.
Remote Tuning Process
The G90 M5's Bosch DME supports remote tuning via OBD for most ECU hardware revisions:
- Consultation: Contact us at sales@ypgmotorsport.com with your VIN and modification list
- Tool Delivery: We ship a pre-configured OBD tuning tool to your location
- Backup Read: Connect the tool and read your factory calibration (~15-20 minutes)
- Calibration: Send us the read file — we develop your custom tune
- Flash: Load the calibration and flash via OBD
- Validation: Send datalogs for review and remote fine-tuning
If your DME hardware revision does not support OBD flashing, we offer bench tuning as an alternative — ship your DME to us, and we will calibrate and return it within 3-5 business days.
Comparison: G90 M5 (S68) vs F90 M5 (S63)
| Spec | G90 M5 (S68 + e-motor) | F90 M5 Competition (S63) |
|---|---|---|
| Stock Power | 727 HP combined | 617 HP |
| Stage 1 Power | ~800 HP combined | ~700 HP |
| Stage 2 Power | ~880 HP combined | ~780 HP |
| Engine Block | Closed-deck | Semi-closed deck |
| Weight | ~2,435 kg | ~1,930 kg |
| Drivetrain | xDrive AWD | xDrive AWD (RWD mode available) |
The G90 produces significantly more power but weighs over 500 kg more than the F90. The S68's closed-deck block gives it a higher power ceiling, but the additional weight means the G90 is more of a grand tourer than a pure performance machine. Supporting Modifications
- Sport Downpipes: The single most impactful hardware modification. The S68's integrated exhaust manifold means downpipes bolt directly to the turbocharger outlets in the hot-vee.
- Performance Intake: Improves airflow to the turbochargers for better spool and top-end response.
- Upgraded Intercooler: The G90's air-to-water intercooler is adequate for Stage 1 but benefits from an upgrade at Stage 2, particularly in hot climates.
- Charge Pipes: Upgraded aluminium charge pipes replace the factory plastic units, eliminating a common failure point at elevated boost pressures.
