What Is Methanol Injection?

Methanol injection (also called water-methanol injection or meth injection) sprays a fine mist of methanol — or a methanol/water mix — into the intake tract of a turbocharged engine. The methanol evaporates on contact, dramatically cooling the intake charge, suppressing knock, and allowing significantly higher boost pressure and ignition timing. It is one of the most effective power-per-dollar modifications for forced-induction engines.

How It Works

A high-pressure pump draws fluid from a trunk-mounted tank and sprays it through a nozzle positioned in the intake pipe, usually post-intercooler. The ECU tune is recalibrated to take advantage of the cooler, denser charge — running more boost and more aggressive timing than would be safe on pump fuel alone. The result: 50–120+ additional horsepower on top of an existing tune, with lower exhaust gas temperatures.

Methanol vs E85

E85 (85% ethanol fuel) provides similar anti-knock benefits but requires a full fuel system conversion — larger injectors, upgraded fuel pump, flex-fuel sensor, and a dedicated ECU tune. Methanol injection is a supplemental system that works alongside your existing pump fuel setup, making it less invasive and more practical for street cars — especially in regions where E85 is unavailable (like the GCC).

ECU Calibration Is Critical

A methanol kit without a matched ECU tune is useless — the factory ECU won't automatically increase boost or timing to take advantage of the cooler charge. A properly calibrated Stage 2+ or Stage 3 tune is essential to unlock the full potential of methanol injection safely.
