AMG M177 Engine — Crate Engine, Forged Internals & Build Costs | YPG Motorsport
The Mercedes-AMG M177 4.0L twin-turbo V8 is the engine behind the C63 W205, E63 W213, G63 W463A, AMG GT63, and AMG GT/GT S/GT R. It is the most tuned AMG engine in the GCC market and one of the most capable V8 biturbo platforms available for high-power builds. YPG Motorsport supplies M177 crate engines, forged internal components, and builds the engine at every stage from Stage 3 street builds to the full Stage 4 assembly that achieved the world's first sub-10-second C63 W205 quarter mile.
M177 Stock Specifications
- Displacement: 3,982cc (4.0L)
- Configuration: Twin-turbo V8 (90-degree bank, hot-vee turbo placement)
- Factory Output Range: 469 HP (C43) through 630 HP (AMG GT R)
- Bore x Stroke: 83.0 x 92.0 mm
- Compression Ratio: 8.6:1 (low for maximum boost headroom)
- Block Material: Compacted graphite iron (CGI) — significantly stronger than aluminum
Why the M177 Is a Strong Build Platform
The M177 uses a compacted graphite iron block — a material more commonly found in diesel engines and motorsport applications, not passenger car V8s. CGI is approximately 75% stronger and 45% stiffer than conventional grey cast iron. AMG chose it specifically to support the M177's potential for power development beyond factory levels. The result is a block that handles significantly elevated power targets without requiring replacement, unlike many aluminum-block competitors.
M177 Forged Internals
YPG Motorsport supplies and installs forged internal components for M177 builds targeting Stage 3 and Stage 4 power levels.
- Forged Pistons: Custom crown design, lower compression ratio for elevated boost, thermal-resistant alloy. Required for any sustained Stage 3+ build.
- Forged Connecting Rods: H-beam design in 4340 chromoly steel. Significantly higher tensile strength than factory cast rods under high-RPM elevated-load conditions.
- Forged Crankshaft: Available for maximum displacement and reliability builds. Factory crank is adequate to approximately 850 HP in normal use.
- Upgraded Fuel System: Low-pressure and high-pressure fuel pump upgrades, upgraded injectors. Required for Stage 3+ builds — the factory fuel system reaches its limit at approximately 680 HP under sustained load.
M177 Crate Engine
YPG Motorsport supplies complete M177 crate engine assemblies — new or low-mileage factory M177 units sourced and supplied for replacement or fresh build purposes. Available in standard factory specification or built-to-order with forged internals and upgraded components for customers planning immediate high-power builds.
- Factory specification crate: Contact YPG for current availability and pricing
- Built-to-order Stage 3 spec crate: Forged pistons, rods, upgraded fuel system — ready to tune
- Built-to-order Stage 4 spec crate: Full forged build, custom turbos, complete assembly
M177 Power Levels by Stage

| Stage 3 | ECU/TCU + downpipes + intake + upgraded turbos + fuel system | 850–950 HP |
| Stage 4 | Full forged build + Stage 3 supporting mods + bench calibration | 1,000–1,200+ HP |
The World Record M177 Build
YPG Motorsport built the world's first sub-10-second C63 W205 using a full Stage 4 M177 assembly. The engine featured forged pistons, rods, and crankshaft, custom turbochargers, upgraded fuel system (injectors, LPFP, HPFP), full catless exhaust, and a bench ECU calibration written in-house by YPG's calibration team. The car ran a sub-10-second quarter mile at Kuwait Motor Town — the GCC's only FIA Grade 2 certified circuit — validated by independent timing equipment.
