M177 Engine Builds — 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 Forged Short Blocks & Crate Engines
The M177 is Mercedes-AMG's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with hot-vee architecture — both turbochargers sit inside the cylinder valley for shorter intake paths, faster spool, and a more compact package. Produced from 2015 onward, the M177 uses a wet-sump oiling system and cross-plane crankshaft, and powers the widest range of AMG models in the current lineup: C63 W205, E63 W213, GT63 four-door X290, GLC63, GLE63, GLS63, and (in a detuned variant) the G63 W463A.
Build Options
YPG Motorsport offers three M177 build configurations. The forged short block ships as a complete bottom end: forged 4340 steel connecting rods, forged aluminium pistons with ceramic-coated crowns and Teflon-coated skirts, ARP fasteners throughout, new bearings, refreshed oil pump, and timing components. CNC-ported cylinder heads are available as a standalone pair with five-angle valve job, competition valve springs, and flow bench verification. The complete crate engine combines both into a turnkey unit with heads, intake, turbo oil lines, and ancillaries — ready to install.
Turbo Upgrade Compatibility
The M177 responds aggressively to turbo upgrades. YPG forged bottom ends are rated to 1,500HP+ and are designed to pair with the YPG Stage 3 and Stage 4 turbo packages. The factory IHI turbochargers can be upgraded to hybrid specifications for 850–950 WHP territory, or replaced with purpose-built race turbochargers for four-digit builds. Every forged M177 short block uses the same internal specification proven in the world-record YPG C63 W205 (9.97s quarter mile, 828 WHP).

The M177 is a direct fit across the C63 W205 (2015–2021 sedan, coupe, and cabriolet), E63/E63 S W213 (2018+ sedan and wagon), GT63 and GT63 S X290 (2019+ four-door), GLC63 X253/C253 (2018+), GLE63 W167 (2020+), and GLS63 X167 (2020+). M177 vs M178: the M177 uses wet-sump oiling and is found in sedans and SUVs; the M178 uses dry-sump oiling and is exclusive to the AMG GT sports car family.
