M156 Engine Builds — 6.2L V8 Forged Short Blocks & Crate Engines
The M156 is Mercedes-AMG's hand-built 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 — the first engine designed and manufactured entirely in-house at Affalterbach, produced from 2006 to 2014. It powers the C63 W204, E63 W211/W212, S63 W221, CLK63 C209 (including the Black Series), ML63 W164, R63 V251, and the SLS AMG C197. With a 102.2mm bore and 94mm stroke, aluminium alloy block, and factory forged crankshaft, the M156 was built for high-RPM naturally aspirated performance — and with aftermarket forged internals, it is fully capable of handling forced induction to 1,500HP+.
Build Options
YPG Motorsport offers M156 builds in three tiers. The forged short block delivers a complete bottom end with forged 4340 steel connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons (ceramic-coated crowns, Teflon-coated skirts), ARP main and rod bolts, new bearings, refreshed oil pump, and timing chain — ready for your existing heads and ancillaries. CNC-ported cylinder heads are available as a standalone pair, flow bench tested with competition valve springs and a full five-angle valve job. The complete crate engine combines both into a turnkey long block with heads, intake manifold, and ancillaries — bolt in and run.
Forced Induction Readiness
The M156's bore-to-stroke ratio and cast-iron-sleeved aluminium block make it an excellent platform for supercharger and turbocharger kits. YPG forged bottom ends are rated to 1,500HP+ — the same internal specification used in our forged internals programme. For naturally aspirated builds targeting maximum RPM and throttle response, the CNC head work alone is worth 30–40 WHP over factory casting flow.
Chassis Fitment
The M156 is a direct fit across the full W204 C63 range (sedan, coupe, and Black Series), the W211 and early W212 E63, W221 S63, C209 CLK63 and CLK63 Black Series, W164 ML63, V251 R63, and the SLS AMG.
