Performance Intake Upgrades: Eventuri, Carbon Fiber Intakes & Cold Air Systems for AMG & BMW M
Why Intake Upgrades Matter for Tuned Cars
The intake system is the first point of entry for air into your engine. On a factory car, the airbox and filter are designed to minimize noise and meet NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) targets, not to maximize airflow. When you add an ECU tune that increases boost pressure and allows more fuel, the factory intake becomes a restriction that limits how much power your calibration can deliver.
A performance intake upgrade does three things:
- Increases airflow volume — Larger ducting, less restrictive filter media, and smoother intake paths allow more air to reach the turbos or throttle body
- Reduces intake air temperature — Heat-shielded or sealed intakes draw cooler air from outside the engine bay rather than hot underhood air
- Improves throttle response — Faster air delivery translates to sharper throttle pickup, particularly noticeable on naturally aspirated engines
Eventuri Intake Systems
YPG Motorsport is an authorized Eventuri dealer. Eventuri is the gold standard for carbon fiber intake systems, and for good reason — their patented design philosophy focuses on creating a complete sealed airbox system rather than just a cone filter on a tube.
What Makes Eventuri Different
Most aftermarket intakes are a carbon fiber tube with a cone filter attached. Eventuri's approach is fundamentally different:
- Carbon fiber sealed airbox — The entire intake system is enclosed, sealing the filter from engine bay heat. This is what separates Eventuri from open-filter designs that actually increase intake temperatures
- Venturi-effect housing — The housing shape accelerates airflow into the filter, maximizing filtration surface area and reducing restriction
- Direct cold-air ducting — Purpose-built ducts channel cold air from the front bumper or wheel wells directly to the sealed airbox
- Carbon fiber construction — Not just for looks. Carbon fiber is thermally insulative, helping keep intake air cool
Eventuri Applications We Carry
- Mercedes-AMG — C63 W205, E63 W213, AMG GT, G63 W463A (M177/M178 platform)
- BMW M — M3/M4 G8x (S58), M3/M4 F8x (S55), M2 Competition, M5 F90 (S63)
- Audi / Lamborghini — RS3, RS6, R8 V10, Huracan (shared platform intakes)
- Toyota — A90 Supra (B58)
Cold Air Intake Systems
Beyond Eventuri, the performance intake market includes systems from manufacturers like aFe Power, BMC, Mishimoto, and more. The key distinction between these and Eventuri is the level of thermal management:
- Open cone filters — The simplest upgrade. A larger, less restrictive cone filter replaces the factory panel filter. Gains: improved sound and slight airflow improvement. Drawback: draws hot engine bay air, potentially increasing IATs
- Enclosed cold air intake — A sealed airbox with ducting to a cold air source. Better thermal management than open filters, similar to Eventuri's approach but typically with plastic or fiberglass construction
- Carbon fiber intake systems — Premium intakes like Eventuri, Gruppe M, and Armaspeed that combine thermal insulation with maximum airflow
K&N Filters and Drop-In Replacements
The simplest intake modification is a drop-in filter replacement. K&N and BMC offer reusable performance filters that replace the factory paper filter inside the stock airbox. These:
- Flow 30-50% more air than factory paper filters
- Are washable and reusable (lifetime filters)
- Maintain the factory airbox seal and cold-air path
- Cost significantly less than a full intake system
For many tuned cars, a high-flow drop-in filter is sufficient. The factory airbox on modern AMG and BMW M cars is actually well-designed, and replacing only the filter media addresses the primary restriction without the complexity of a full system swap.
Intake Upgrades and ECU Tuning
An important consideration: installing an intake alone does not require a new ECU tune on modern cars. The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and manifold pressure sensors adapt to the increased airflow automatically. However, combining an intake upgrade with an ECU tune that is calibrated for the increased airflow delivers more than either modification alone.
When we develop ECU calibrations at YPG Motorsport, we account for your intake system. A car with an Eventuri sealed system and one with a stock airbox and drop-in filter have different airflow characteristics, and the tune should reflect that.
