Stage 3 vs Stage 4 Race Turbo Upgrade — Which One Do You Need? (M177 / M178 AMG)

If you've already pushed your Mercedes-AMG past Stage 2 — ECU tune, downpipes, maybe an intercooler — and you're sitting in the 600–700HP range, the next step is turbocharger hardware. The factory turbos are tapped out. But which turbo upgrade makes sense for your build: Stage 3 or Stage 4 Race Turbo?

This guide breaks down the differences between the two turbo upgrade tiers YPG Motorsport offers for the M177 and M178 4.0L twin-turbo V8, covering power targets, required supporting mods, cost, and which build path each upgrade is designed for.

Stage 3 Turbo Upgrade — The Street and Track Standard

What It Is

The Stage 3 turbo upgrade replaces the internal rotating components of your factory turbochargers with higher-flowing hardware. The factory compressor wheels are swapped for CNC-machined billet 2618 aluminium wheels with optimised blade geometry. The factory turbine wheels are replaced with upgraded Inconel alloy units. The housings receive a ceramic thermal barrier coating to reduce underhood heat soak — critical in GCC temperatures.

Externally, the turbochargers look factory. All mounting points, oil feed and drain lines, coolant lines, and wastegate actuators are retained. It's a bolt-on upgrade that can be reversed by reinstalling the original turbo components.

What You Get

On pump fuel with catless downpipes and a YPG Stage 3 ECU calibration, expect 750–800HP at the wheels. Add an upgraded intercooler, high-flow intakes, and colder spark plugs, and you're looking at 850–900HP. With forged internals, an upgraded fuel system, and E85, the Stage 3 turbo hardware will support 900–1,000HP on the stock block dimensions.

The power delivery is progressive and streetable. Spool speed is nearly identical to factory — the billet compressor wheels are lighter than the cast originals, so boost onset is actually marginally quicker. There's no turbo lag penalty for the additional airflow capacity.

Required Supporting Mods

Minimum: Catless downpipes + Stage 3 ECU calibration. Without both, the turbos will spin but the ECU won't command enough boost to use the extra airflow.

Recommended: Upgraded intercooler, high-flow air filters or carbon airbox, colder spark plugs.

Above 850HP: Forged connecting rods and pistons. The factory M177 rods are reliable up to approximately 850HP with a conservative calibration, but they become the weak point above that threshold — a single knock event under sustained load can bend a rod.

What It Is

The Stage 4 Race Turbo is not an upgrade to your factory turbochargers — it's a complete replacement. The factory turbo units are removed entirely and replaced with Precision 58/76mm ball-bearing turbochargers. New cast aluminium compressor housings with 3-inch anti-surge inlets. New cast Inconel turbine housings with internal wastegate assemblies. The entire rotating assembly is balanced to OEM specification or better.

The kit is supplied complete with steel-braided oil and coolant lines, billet aluminium adapters, 3-inch inlet couplers with clamps, and a reducer for stock airbox use. It reuses the stock wastegate actuators and is compatible with stock or aftermarket downpipes.

What You Get

The Stage 4 Race Turbo is rated to 1,200HP+ with full supporting modifications. This is the same turbo platform that powered our W205 C63 to the world record 9.97-second quarter mile at 828 WHP at Beech Bend Raceway Park, Kentucky.

At this power level, the turbo hardware is not the limiting factor — the engine, fuel system, transmission, and drivetrain are. The Stage 4 Race Turbo is designed for builds where every other component has been upgraded to match.

All mandatory at this power level:

  • Forged connecting rods and pistons (or M177 crate engine build)
  • Catless downpipes
  • Upgraded fuel system (HPFP, injectors, supplementary fuelling)
  • E85 or methanol injection
  • Race intercooler
  • Stage 4 Race-specific ECU calibration
  • Upgraded spark plugs (race-spec cold range)
  • Transmission calibration (torque limiter removal)

The Build Path: How Most People Get There

The typical M177 build progression looks like this:

Stage 1: ECU tune only — 530–650HP depending on base variant. No hardware required. This is where most owners start.

Stage 2: ECU tune + catless downpipes — 600–700HP. The downpipes remove the exhaust restriction that limits the factory turbos. This is the last step before turbo hardware.

Stage 3: Upgraded turbochargers + Stage 3 ECU calibration — 800–1,000HP. The factory turbos are no longer the bottleneck. This is the highest power level achievable on factory turbo housings.

Stage 4 Race Turbo: Full turbocharger replacement + forged internals + race calibration — 1,200HP+. This is a purpose-built race car. The factory engine block is still usable, but everything inside it has been replaced.

Which One Should You Buy?

Choose Stage 3 if:

  • You drive your car on the street and want it to feel fast everywhere — not just at full boost on a drag strip
  • You want 800–900HP without tearing the engine apart
  • You value spool speed and daily drivability alongside peak power
  • You're building a track day weapon that still drives home afterwards
  • Your budget for the turbo upgrade and supporting mods is $8,000–$15,000 total

Choose Stage 4 Race Turbo if:

  • You are building a dedicated drag car or time-attack car
  • You have already committed to forged internals or a crate engine build
  • Your power target is 1,000HP+ and you need turbo hardware that won't be the bottleneck
  • You want the same turbo platform that powered the world record C63 to a 9.97-second quarter mile
  • Your total build budget for turbo + engine + fuel + calibration is $25,000+

ECU Calibration Matters More Than Hardware

This is the most important thing to understand about turbo upgrades: the turbocharger hardware determines what power is possible. The ECU calibration determines what power is actually delivered — safely, reliably, and without destroying the engine.

A Stage 3 turbo upgrade with a mediocre calibration will make less power and run less reliably than the same turbo with a calibration from someone who understands the M177's boost control strategy, knock sensor behavior, exhaust gas temperature limits, and torque limiter architecture.
