What Is the Mercedes-AMG M156?
The M156 is Mercedes-AMG's first independently designed engine — a 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 that debuted in 2006 and powered the C63 (W204), E63 (W212), ML63, CLK63, SLS AMG and several other chassis through 2015. Unlike the M113 and M155 that preceded it, the M156 was built from scratch by AMG in Affalterbach — hand-assembled, one man, one engine. It produces 451–622 HP depending on the application, with the SLS AMG sitting at the top of the range.
The M156 is a dry-sump (SLS) or wet-sump (all others) design with forged steel crankshaft, aluminium block, and individual throttle bodies on the SLS variant. It revs to 7,200 RPM in most applications and delivers a sound signature that no turbocharged AMG engine has been able to replicate.

Head Bolt Failure
Early M156 engines (2006–2011) used TTY (torque-to-yield) head bolts that are known to stretch and fail over time, causing coolant leaks and potential head gasket failure. AMG revised the bolts in later production. If buying a used M156, head bolt status is the first question to ask.
Cam Adjuster / Intake Manifold Flap Failure
The intake manifold tumble flaps can break and send debris into the cylinders — catastrophic if it happens. Many owners delete or pin the flaps as a preventive measure. The cam adjusters can also wear and produce rattle on cold start.
Valve Guides and Lifters
High-mileage M156 engines can develop valve guide wear, leading to oil consumption. Hydraulic lifter tick is common but usually not catastrophic — it's often an oil quality or service interval issue.

The naturally aspirated M156 responds to calibration differently than forced-induction engines. You won't see 100+ HP gains from a tune alone — but a proper Stage 1 ECU calibration adds 15–25 HP by optimizing ignition timing, removing factory torque limiters, and adjusting the rev limiter. On cars with headers and a full exhaust, Stage 2 calibrations add 30–45 HP over stock.
