How to Choose the Right Link ECU: Buyer's Guide for G4X and G5 Voodoo Pro
Link ECU offers a wide product range — from entry-level wire-in units to the flagship G5 Voodoo Pro — and choosing the right one depends on your engine, your build goals, and the features you need. This guide breaks down every model in the current lineup so you can make an informed decision before purchasing.
Step 1: Plug-In or Wire-In?
Plug-In ECUs replace the factory ECU using your car's existing OEM wiring loom. No cutting, no splicing, no custom harness required. If Link makes a plug-in for your specific vehicle, this is the fastest and simplest path to standalone. Plug-in ECUs are available for select Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Honda, BMW, Audi, and Mini models.
Wire-In ECUs require a custom engine harness and are used when no plug-in exists for your vehicle, when you are performing an engine swap, or when you need maximum I/O flexibility for complex builds. Wire-in is more work to install but offers complete adaptability to any spark-ignition engine.
Rule of thumb: If a plug-in exists for your car and you are keeping the factory engine, start there. If you are swapping engines, building a custom car, or need features beyond what the plug-in offers, go wire-in.
Step 2: How Many Cylinders or Rotors?
The number of cylinders (or rotors) your engine has determines the minimum ECU you need. Here is how the wire-in range maps out:
| ECU | Sequential Capacity | Batch Fire Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| AtomX | 4 cylinders | 4 cylinders |
| MonsoonX | 4 cylinders / 2 rotors | 8 cylinders |
| StormX | 8 cylinders / 4 rotors | 8 cylinders |
| FuryX | 6 cylinders / 3 rotors | 8 cylinders |
| XtremeX | 8 cylinders / 4 rotors | 8 cylinders |
| G5 Voodoo Pro | 12 cylinders / 6 rotors | 12 cylinders |
Step 3: What Features Do You Need?
All Link ECUs share the same PC Link software and core calibration capabilities. The differences are in I/O count and advanced features. Here is what steps up at each tier:
- AtomX — Basic standalone. Full configurability, 512 MB logging, but minimal I/O. Best for simple 4-cylinder builds on a budget.
- MonsoonX — Adds more I/O for accessories and sensors. Good for 4-cylinder builds needing more auxiliary control.
- StormX — The sweet spot for most builds. Adds trigger oscilloscope, stepper motor idle control, rotary oil metering pump control, onboard knock control, closed-loop boost control, anti-lag, launch control, and gear shift control. If you are unsure, the StormX is probably the right choice.
- FuryX — Same advanced features as StormX but adds onboard digital wideband lambda controller. If precise AFR calibration is important and you want to eliminate an external wideband controller, the FuryX is the upgrade.
- XtremeX — Adds built-in e-throttle control (drive-by-wire), traction control, and cruise control on top of everything in the StormX. Required for any build running electronic throttle without an external e-throttle module.
- G5 Voodoo Pro — Everything above plus: dual microcontroller, 24 total drives, direct injection support, dual wideband, dual e-throttle, Wi-Fi, GPS, USB-C, Ethernet, 3-axis accelerometer, Dual CAN with dedicated pins, NOS control, and up to 30 auxiliary outputs. Required for 9+ cylinder engines, DI engines, and the most demanding professional applications.
Step 4: Do You Need Direct Injection Support?
If your engine uses direct injection (common on modern turbo engines from BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Ford, GM, etc.), only the G5 Voodoo Pro currently offers DI control capability via external DI driver box. The G4X range supports port injection only. If you are building a modern DI engine — or want to run a DI+port staged injection setup — the Voodoo Pro is required.
Quick Decision Guide
- Budget 4-cylinder street build → AtomX or MonsoonX
- 4-cylinder turbo with motorsport features → StormX
- 6-cylinder build wanting onboard wideband → FuryX
- V8 or 8-cylinder build → StormX or XtremeX
- Any build needing e-throttle → XtremeX or G5 Voodoo Pro
- LS swap with pre-terminated harness → StormX + LS Engine Harness
- V10, V12, or 4+ rotor → G5 Voodoo Pro
- Direct injection engine → G5 Voodoo Pro
- Professional motorsport with maximum features → G5 Voodoo Pro
