What Is a Turbo Upgrade?
A turbo upgrade replaces or modifies the factory turbocharger(s) to increase airflow, boost pressure, and peak power output. It is the single largest hardware modification in a high-performance build — often the difference between a 600 HP car and a 1,000+ HP car. At YPG Motorsport, turbo upgrades are a core part of our Stage 3 packages and beyond.
Types of Turbo Upgrades

When Do You Need a Turbo Upgrade?
Factory turbos are sized to match the OEM power target with a margin of safety. A Stage 1 or Stage 2 ECU tune can extract that margin — typically +50–120 HP — without touching the turbos. But once you exceed the factory turbo's airflow capacity, you hit a ceiling. That's where a turbo upgrade opens the next power band.
On M177-powered AMGs, for example, Stage 1–2 tunes reach 650–700 HP on stock turbos. To push beyond 750 HP into true Stage 3 territory, upgraded turbos are required alongside downpipes, fueling, and a recalibrated ECU tune.
Supporting Modifications
A turbo upgrade is never a standalone modification. To safely support the increased airflow and boost, you typically need: upgraded downpipes for exhaust flow, a recalibrated ECU tune (Stage 3+), upgraded fuel system (injectors, pump, lines), an upgraded intercooler, and on high-power builds, forged internals to handle the increased cylinder pressure.
