Mercedes G63 vs Lamborghini Urus — Luxury SUV Tuning Compared | 2026
Two Super SUVs, Two Very Different Tuning Stories
The Mercedes-AMG G63 and Lamborghini Urus are the undisputed kings of the luxury performance SUV market. Both pack twin-turbocharged V8 engines, both weigh over two tonnes, and both deliver absurd acceleration for vehicles of their size. But when it comes to ECU tuning, these two behemoths take dramatically different paths to more power.
At YPG Motorsport, we've tuned both platforms extensively. Here's our honest comparison for owners deciding between these two — or looking to extract maximum performance from the one they already own.

The M177 in the G63 — A Tuning Legend
The Mercedes-AMG M177 is one of the most tunable engines on the planet. This 4.0-liter hot-vee twin-turbo V8 powers everything from the C63 to the GT R, and in the G63, it's tuned for maximum torque delivery. From the factory, 577 HP and 850 Nm of torque are impressive, but the M177 has enormous headroom.
Stage 1 ECU tuning pushes the G63 to approximately 680 HP — a gain of over 100 HP from software alone. Stage 2 with downpipes, intake, and an intercooler upgrade can reach 750 HP. The 9G-Tronic transmission is robust and handles these power levels reliably with a TCU calibration.
The G63's challenge is weight. At 2,560 kg, it's the heaviest vehicle in this comparison by a significant margin. Every horsepower has to work harder. But the character of the G-Wagen is the point — you're buying theater, presence, and capability, not a lap time.

The EA825 in the Urus — VW Group's Secret Weapon
The Lamborghini Urus uses the EA825 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which shares its architecture with the engines found in the Audi RS6, RS7, Bentley Continental GT, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo. This VW Group platform is one of the most proven and well-developed V8 architectures in production.
Starting at 641 HP, the Urus already has a 64 HP advantage over the G63. Stage 1 tuning pushes it to approximately 720 HP — a gain of 80 HP. Stage 2 with supporting modifications reaches around 800 HP, putting the Urus firmly in supercar territory while carrying five passengers and luggage.
The ZF 8HP transmission in the Urus is one of the best torque-converter automatics ever made. It handles high torque loads gracefully and responds well to TCU tuning. The Urus is also 360 kg lighter than the G63, which means every power gain translates more directly to acceleration.

Character Differences Beyond the Numbers
Numbers only tell part of the story. The G63 is a cultural icon — a military vehicle turned luxury status symbol that happens to make 577+ HP. It drives tall, sounds angry, and makes an entrance like nothing else on the road. Tuning the G63 amplifies all of this: more V8 bark, more shove, more absurdity. It will never be fast around a track, and that's entirely the point.
The Urus is the opposite philosophy. Lamborghini built a genuine performance SUV that can hold its own on circuit while still being practical. It sits lower, drives flatter, and feels more athletic. Tuning the Urus makes it legitimately quick — not just "fast for an SUV" but fast by any standard.
Both are hot-vee twin-turbo V8 designs, meaning the turbochargers sit in the valley between the cylinder banks for shorter intake paths and better thermal management. This architecture is inherently responsive to tuning.
Which Should You Tune?
If you already own one, tune it — both platforms deliver exceptional Stage 1 results from a simple ECU flash. The Urus is the better pure performance platform thanks to its lower weight, higher stock power, and the proven EA825 architecture. The G63 is the better statement piece — already commanding, tuning makes it even more dominant.
For buyers choosing between them specifically as tuning platforms: the Urus gives you more usable performance per HP gained because it weighs less. The G63 gives you more character and presence. Both hold value well when properly maintained, and tasteful Stage 1 tunes rarely impact resale negatively on either platform.
