McLaren 720S & 765LT ECU Tuning Guide — Stage 1 & 2 | M840T 4.0T V8 | 2026 | YPG Motorsport

McLaren builds the 720S and 765LT around one of the most capable turbocharged V8s in any supercar — the M840T 4.0-liter twin-turbo with a flat-plane crankshaft, dry-sump lubrication, and a carbon-fiber Monocage II chassis that weighs less than most hot hatches. The combination of a lightweight platform and a turbocharged engine with factory headroom makes these cars respond aggressively to ECU tuning.

The challenge is access. McLaren's ECU security is among the tightest in the industry, and working with these calibrations requires specialized capability.

Engine Platform: M840T 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8

Stock Power: - 720S: 710 HP / 568 lb-ft - 720S Spider: 710 HP / 568 lb-ft - 765LT: 755 HP / 590 lb-ft - 765LT Spider: 755 HP / 590 lb-ft

The M840T is McLaren's in-house engine — a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft and 180-degree firing order. Key architecture details:

  • Flat-plane crank: Lighter rotating assembly, higher-revving, sharper throttle response. Enables the engine to rev freely and produce power in a more linear fashion than cross-plane V8s.
  • Dry-sump lubrication: Ensures oil supply under high lateral and longitudinal G-forces. Allows the engine to sit lower in the chassis.
  • Twin-scroll turbochargers: One per bank, feeding through a compact exhaust manifold design.
  • Aluminum block and heads: Keeps weight low in a car where every kilogram matters.
  • 7-speed SSG (Seamless Shift Gearbox): McLaren's dual-clutch transmission, known for fast shifts but with specific torque limitations.

The 765LT runs higher boost, revised camshafts, titanium exhaust components, and a lighter flywheel compared to the 720S. Despite starting at a higher baseline, it still responds to tuning — there is headroom above the factory calibration.

Stage 1 — ECU Calibration Only

720S

Target Output: ~760-790 HP / ~610-640 lb-ft

765LT

Target Output: ~810-830 HP / ~630-660 lb-ft

Stage 1 is a standalone ECU recalibration with no hardware modifications.

What the tune adjusts: - Boost pressure targets (peak boost increase of 2-4 PSI) - Ignition timing optimization - Fuel delivery and air-fuel ratio refinement - Wastegate duty cycle - Torque limiter increase - Overboost strategy (where applicable)

Parts Required: - ECU bench tune (see ECU access section below) - No additional hardware - 93 octane / 98 RON fuel recommended

Cost: $2,500 - $4,000

What to Expect: On the 720S, Stage 1 adds 50-80 HP from calibration alone. The flat-plane crank V8 already has a sharp, immediate power delivery — the tune extends the boost curve, pushes peak power higher in the rev range, and increases midrange torque. In a car that weighs 2,828 lbs dry, 50 HP is more than a number on a dyno sheet.

On the 765LT, gains are slightly smaller in percentage terms (the factory tune is already more aggressive), but 55-75 HP on top of 755 HP in a car that weighs 2,709 lbs dry is significant.

Stage 2 — ECU + Bolt-On Hardware

720S

Target Output: ~830-870 HP / ~660-700 lb-ft

765LT

Target Output: ~880-920 HP / ~680-720 lb-ft

Stage 2 adds exhaust and intake hardware to support higher boost and improved airflow.

Parts Required: - Stage 2 ECU calibration - High-flow downpipes (catted or catless) - Performance exhaust system (cat-back or full system) - High-flow intake or performance air filters - Upgraded intercooler (recommended, especially for repeated pulls or warm climates)

Cost: $8,000 - $15,000

Breakdown: - ECU tune (Stage 2): $2,500 - $4,000 - Downpipes: $2,500 - $5,000 - Sport exhaust: $3,000 - $7,000 - Intake upgrades: $500 - $1,500 - Intercooler upgrade: $2,000 - $4,000

Key Hardware Notes

Downpipes: The downpipes are the most impactful hardware upgrade on the M840T. The stock catalytic converters are highly restrictive. Replacing them with high-flow cats or catless downpipes reduces exhaust backpressure, improves turbo efficiency, and allows the tune to run higher boost safely. This is where the bulk of Stage 2 gains come from.

Exhaust: A sport exhaust (cat-back) reduces backpressure downstream and transforms the sound character. The flat-plane crank gives the M840T a unique exhaust note — sharper and more exotic than most V8s. Opening up the exhaust amplifies that character significantly.

Intercooler: The stock intercooler on the 720S/765LT is adequate for single pulls but heat-soaks under sustained high-load driving, particularly in ambient temperatures above 30C (86F). An upgraded intercooler maintains consistent intake air temperatures and consistent power.

Stock Turbo Limits

The factory twin-scroll turbochargers on the M840T reach their efficiency limits at approximately:

  • 720S: ~850-870 HP on stock turbos (with full bolt-ons and an aggressive tune)
  • 765LT: ~900-920 HP on stock turbos

Beyond these numbers, the compressor efficiency drops, exhaust gas temperatures climb, and power gains diminish rapidly. Pushing stock turbos past their efficiency range generates heat, not power.

Stage 3 — Turbo Upgrade (Less Common, More Expensive)

Target Output: ~950-1,100+ HP

Stage 3 on the M840T platform is a less common path than on EA825/EA888-platform vehicles. McLaren's turbo packaging is tight, the engine bay is compact, and the carbon tub chassis limits access. Turbo upgrades exist, but they require significant labor and supporting modifications.

Parts Required: - Upgraded turbochargers (hybrid or full replacement) - Stage 3 ECU calibration - Full exhaust system (downpipes + cat-back) - Upgraded intercooler system - Upgraded fuel system (higher-flow injectors, fuel pumps) - Upgraded intake system - Reinforced charge pipes and couplers - Engine oil cooler upgrade - Transmission reinforcement (SSG clutch upgrade recommended above 900 HP)

Cost: $20,000 - $35,000+

Breakdown: - Turbo upgrade kit: $8,000 - $15,000 - ECU calibration: $3,000 - $5,000 - Fuel system: $2,000 - $4,000 - Intercooler: $2,000 - $4,000 - Exhaust (full): $3,000 - $7,000 - Clutch / transmission: $3,000 - $6,000 - Supporting parts + labor: $2,000 - $5,000

SSG Transmission Considerations

McLaren's SSG (Seamless Shift Gearbox) is a dual-clutch unit that is fast and refined in stock form but has known torque limitations:

  • Stock clutch capacity: The factory clutch handles Stage 1 power without issue. At Stage 2, clutch slip can begin to appear, particularly in lower gears under hard launches.
  • Clutch upgrade: At 850+ HP, an upgraded clutch is recommended. At 900+ HP, it becomes necessary for reliability.
  • Gearbox internals: The SSG internals (shafts, synchros, forks) are generally robust through Stage 2. Stage 3 power may require attention to specific internal components depending on driving style and use case.

Clutch upgrades for the SSG are available from specialist McLaren tuning shops. Cost is typically $3,000 - $6,000 including labor.

McLaren ECU Security and Bench Tuning

McLaren uses a secured ECU system with encrypted calibration data. Standard OBD-II tuning is not possible on the 720S and 765LT through conventional methods.

Tuning access methods:

  • Bench tuning: The ECU is physically removed, opened, and the calibration is read/written via direct processor access. This is the most common method and requires specialized equipment and McLaren-specific ECU knowledge.
  • OBD-based solutions: Some tuning platforms (M-Engineering's M-Tuner suite, for example) have developed OBD-based calibration access for the M840T platform. These solutions simplify the tuning process but are platform-specific and license-controlled.
  • Piggyback / standalone: Less common on McLaren, but some tuners use piggyback modules that intercept and modify sensor signals. These are generally less refined than direct ECU calibration.

YPG Motorsport performs McLaren ECU calibration via bench tuning and works with the major calibration platforms available for the M840T. Remote tuning is available for customers who can have their ECU removed and shipped.

Build Cost Summary

Stage 720S Target 765LT Target Key Modifications Estimated Cost
Stage 1 760-790 HP 810-830 HP ECU calibration only $2,500 - $4,000
Stage 2 830-870 HP 880-920 HP ECU + downpipes + exhaust + intake $8,000 - $15,000
Stage 3 950-1,100+ HP 1,000-1,100+ HP Turbo upgrade + full build $20,000 - $35,000+

Final Word

The McLaren 720S and 765LT are among the most rewarding cars to tune in the exotic car world. The M840T engine has genuine headroom, the flat-plane crank delivers power with a character that few engines can match, and the lightweight chassis means every horsepower is amplified.

Stage 1 is the standout value — $2,500 to $4,000 for 50-80 HP in a car that already weighs nothing. Stage 2 with downpipes and a revised tune pushes both cars into genuinely elite power territory (830-920 HP) for $8,000-$15,000. Stage 3 exists but is a committed, expensive path that requires transmission work and a tuner who knows the platform inside out.

The two things to watch: McLaren's ECU security (work with a tuner who has proven access and calibration capability) and the SSG clutch (budget for a clutch upgrade at Stage 2+ power levels).
